ECONOMYNEXT – Ashok Leyland has won a deal to supply new engine kits for the Sri Lanka Transport Board the majority of whose fleet consists of buses from the Indian company.

Sri Lankan government spokesman Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka said the Sri Lanka Transport Board will buy 163 new engine kits from Ashok Leyland.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal by Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva to procure the Ashok Leyland engine kits under Indian grant assistance, he told a news conference.

According to the transport ministry, about 67% of the Sri Lanka Transport Board bus fleet consists of Ashok Leyland buses and 30% TATA Motors.

Ashok Leyland had earlier been invited to supply 326 engine kits to the SLTB and TATA Motors 174 kits.

But the order from Ashok Leyland has been increased as the fleet has about 1,100 Ashok Leyland buses which are 5-10 years old after a previous order from TATA to supply engine kits to TATA buses that were 10-15 years old was not pursued as the engines were no longer manufactured.

The new order from Ashok Leyland is to buy 163 engine kits at US$11,550 each.
