ECONOMYNEXT - The European Commission had recommended that a ban on fish exports from Sri Lanka to the European Union be lifted following action on illegal fishing.

Sri Lanka has now a robust legal and policy framework to fight illegal fishing activities," European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, said in a statement.

"As the fight against IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated) fishing is part of the EU's commitment towards sustainability and good ocean governance, each third country that comes on board is an asset.”

Sri Lanka was previously the second biggest exporter of fresh and chilled swordfish and tuna to the EU with exports worth 74 million Euros in 2013.

The statement said the ban will be lifted if the recommendation is approved bu the European Union (EU) Fisheries Council. The council will discuss the proposal at the "next available opportunity," the statement said, without giving dates.
