IPL Bidding: Sri Lanka top of the flops

ECONOMYNEXT, England players attracted megabuck bids in the Indian Premier League auction Monday, while Sri Lankan players emerged top of the flops with even Afghan players doing better.
England all-rounder Ben Stokes set a new record for a foreigner by joining the Rising Pune Supergiants for more than $2 million while Sri Lanka's lone player, Angelo Mathews did not proceed beyound the $300,000 base price.
Mathews was taken by Delhi Daredevils for 20 million Indian rupees while in contrast Afghanistan's Rashid Khan going to Sunrisers Hyderabad for 40 million Indian rupees, twice the amount commanded by the Sri Lankan skipper.
Asela Gunaratne who slammed 84 to power Sri Lanka to a last-ball victory against Australia on Sunday, clinching their Twenty20 series, fetched three million Indian rupees or about $45,000.
He was taken at the minimum bid of three million Indian rupees and failed to get better attention despite his stellar performance. He pounded the Australian bowlers with five sixes and six fours off 46 balls to get his side home by two wickets to scenes of wild jubilation at Geelong.
