ECONOMYNEXT – Jiffy International AS Kristiansand, a Norwegian horticultural products firm with a subsidiary in Sri Lanka, has opened its asian regional office in the island.

Jiffy Products S L (Pvt) Ltd, the Sri Lankan subsidiary, has the capacity to produce 17,000 MT of coco substrate annually and exports value added Jiffy-7C pellets, grow block, grow bags and other products mainly to Europe, Canada, USA, Japan and India.

The Board of Investment said Jiffy Products was incorporated in 2003 as a BOI project with the main attraction being the availability of coir fiber pith, derived from coconut husks, a product increasingly popular as a medium to propagate and grow plants.

Jiffy Products S L (Pvt) Ltd opened its new regional office at the Mirigama Export Processing Zone, where it began operations. It has since then extended its operation to four locations of which two are in the Mirigama Export Processing Zone and the other two in Pannala and Kobeigane in the North Western Province.

Thorbjørn Gaustadsæther, Norwegian Ambassador in Sri Lanka, said in a speech as chief guest at the opening  that he was pleased that Jiffy International AS has opened its regional office for Asia in Sri Lanka.

“Jiffy directly and indirectly employs over 10,000 people in Sri Lanka. Since these investments are outside of Colombo, this business has changed people’s lives by creating jobs and bringing prosperity to communities in more remote areas.”
