ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lanka unit of Singapore’s Prima Group says its surveillance camera business which has won big airport and police contracts has potential to grow not just in security but analytics and retail sectors as well.

“Analytics is the future,” said Tan Beng Chuan, General Manager of Prima Group’s Sri Lanka unit.

The group’s information technology arm, Prima Management Services (Private) Limited, sees growth potential not only in the surveillance camera market but in a range of other applications, Tan told Economynext.com.

These range from access control and license plate and facial recognition to traffic management and retail applications that can enhance customer satisfaction and optimise store and display layouts.

Prima Management Services (PMS) has just been were awarded the “Solution Gold Partnership Certificate” by Axis Communications, a big global network video company based in Sweden which developed the first network surveillance camera.

“PMS was considered for the award based on their investment towards the partnership by setting up a full-fledged demonstration facility, training staff and ability to deploy the latest surveillance technology and market development programs,” said Akalanka Wijesundara, Country Manager of Axis Communications for Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

“This is evident in the airport and police projects,” he told a news conference.

Wijesundara said Axis Communications has installed video surveillance equipment in places like the airport, ports, and for city surveillance and critical infrastructure projects.

The Prima unit, established in 2006, does software development, and IT consultancy work as well as providing IP-based video surveillance networks, video analytics software and face recognition software.

Prima Management Services has provided surveillance equipment to the Sri Lanka Aviation Authority and the Sri Lanka Police, said Crysantha Perera, the firm’s General Manager and Country IT Head.

“This a strategic investment for Prima and the business is now growing,” he said. “We want to do advanced surveillance work and have brought in analytics to Sri Lanka.

“We also have a partnership for face recognition software which we think is the next trend - not NFC (near field communications) or bar code. It’s facial recognition to introduce in access control and other things.”
