ECONOMYNEXT – An agreement on a ‘Strategic Economic Partnership’ between Sri Lanka and Thailand is expected to be signed during Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak’s visit to the island in August 2017.
Sri Lanka and Thailand came to a consensus on a ‘Trade in Goods’ Free Trade Agreement as the first step before comprehensive bilateral talks on June 2 in Bangkok, the commerce ministry said in a statement.
This was during the second ‘Sub Committee Meeting on Trade Related Matters’ between high level trade officials of both countries.
The Thai delegation was led by Director-General of Thailand’s Department of Trade Negotiations Boonyarit Kalayanamit, while the Sri Lankan contingent was led by Director General of Commerce of Sri Lanka Sonali Wijeratne.
The Thai side submitted a draft memorandum of understanding (MOU) on a Strategic Economic Partnership to Sri Lanka for consideration on which both sides exchanged views, the statement said.
“The Sri Lankan side suggested some additions and an action plan,” it said. “The MOU is expected to be concluded with an action plan in order to be signed during Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak’s visit to Sri Lanka in August 2017.”
