Sri Lanka PM refuses to resign; SLFP to meet President again

Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has refused a request by Sri Lanka Freedom Party to resign ahead of a no-confidence motion while his partymen called on SLFP minister with no confidence in the government to resign.

State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said following the refusal of the PM to resign, SLFP ministers will meet the President in the night to decide on their action tomorrow.

Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, had conveyed the request for the PM to step down following the weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Meanwhile members of an SLFP affiliated trade union blocked an access road and launched a protest at the main airport in Colombo demanding a 10,000 rupee pay hike.

A confidence motion against the PM and the government will be taken up for debate tomorrow.

State Minister Harsha de Silva said any ministers who had no confidence in the government should resign.

Tamil National Alliance chief R Sambanthan who met President Sirisena said the party's decision will be made later today.

The PM is faulted over a securities scam involving the central bank, and a gilt dealership owned by the son in law of a former central bank governor appointed by him.  (Colombo/Apr02/2018)
