The ‘SLT Zero One Awards for Digital Excellence’ (SLT 01 Awards) will be for innovative use of digital media to transform society by using digitized products and services, marketing campaigns, interactive website or microsites, mobile based initiatives and those to enable communities, it said.

“The digital landscape is becoming increasingly popular in today’s technologically driven society and if used strategically, it can be effectively leveraged to meet the marketing objectives of organizations and businesses,” SLT chairman P. G. Kumarasinghe Sirisena said.

The 66 awards cover six categories: Best Digital-Enabled Product/Service, Best Digital-Integrated Campaign, Best Community Empowerment Programme, Best Digital Media Agency, Best Website or Microsite and Best Use of Mobile.

There will be three individual awards for the ‘Social Media Personality of the Year’, ‘Best Use of Digital Media by a Public Figure/Celebrity’ and ‘Best Software/Application Development’.

Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure Harin Fernando said the awards target a wide scope of digital marketing activities and will encourage a diversity in applicants from across Sri Lanka.

“I believe that awards such as these will prove instrumental in enhancing and uplifting local talents in the digital field,” he said at the launch.

“It will prove to be a key contributor towards economic growth by providing organizations and individuals with tremendous opportunities locally as well as internationally through digital innovations.”

Fernando said Sri Lanka was going through a “digital transformation” with a range of initiatives started by his ministry to digitise a host of activities enabling citizens to get their work and transactions done “with their fingertips.”

He said 2017 will be an “interesting year” when many of the initiatives will start having an impact on society with all government institutions to be linked by high-speed broadband enabling them to share information and provide services online.

“These initiatives will completely revolutionise this country,” Fernando said. “We will digitalise health, law, the police – all sectors will go digital from next year.”

SLT Group chief executive Dileepa Wijesundera said that the digital award is a key catalyst in supporting the digital media development in Sri Lanka.

“The “Zero One” awards will be open to a wide audience which includes individuals, agencies, SMEs, brands, multinationals and students.”
