ECONOMYNEXT - Global Ceylon Seafood (Pvt) Ltd will be leased a 150 hectare area in Koddiyar in Sri Lanka's Trincomalee district for a commercial aquaculture project.

The cabinet has approved a proposal by Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, the state information office said.

The firm plans to culture pompano, moda (a type of sea bass) and kossa (a species of grouper). The firm is a joint venture between Continental Ceylon Seafood (Pvt) Ltd of Sri Lanka and Continental Ceylon Seafood A.S of Norway.

The coastal stretch belonging to Sri Lanka Ports Authority will be leased for 30 years.

Although Sri Lanka is an island, culturing marine fish in not widespread in Sri Lanka unlike in East Asia. (Colombo/Sept14/2017)
