ECONOMYNEXT – The stolen Golden Peacock was found abandoned aboard a private bus in Colombo yesterday even as police intensified a search for the prestigious Indian film award nicked  from the funeral of cinematographer Lester James Peries.

The bus crew handed over the abandoned award to the Kollupitiya police station, police headquarters said in a statement. It said investigations were continuing.

The award was displayed by his coffin and placed next to a portrait of the 99-year-old celebrity director who is regarded as the father of Sri Lankan cinema.

A family member said they noticed the award had disappeared as the coffin was removed from his home to the Independence Square for a cremation on Wednesday with full state honours. It has also transpired that what the robber nicked at the funeral was not the actual Golden Peacock, but a replica.

The award was made in 1965 for Lester’s “Gamperaliya” which was adjudged the  best film at the International Film Festival of India.  (COLOMBO, May 5, 2018)
