ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lankan government dismissed protests by fishermen against a $1.4 billion ‘Port City’ project funded by Chinese investors, saying sand mining to reclaim land would not harm fishing grounds.

Patali Champika Ranawaka, the minister of Megapolis and Western Development, under whom the project comes, said they had held several rounds of talks with fishermen groups in Negombo.

“We explained the steps taken to mitigate damage from offshore sand mining and provided scientific evidence that there would be no lasting harm to fishing..”

CHEC Port City Colombo, part of China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) which is doing the project, had been asked to shift sand mining areas to minimise the impact on fishing, he said.

“There will be only temporary effects on fishing, if at all, “Ranawaka told a news conference.
