ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's police chief Pujith Jayasundara has launched a major offensive codenamed "3552” aimed at spiritual upliftment of his men and women.
An order had been given in February to the 85,000 strong police to meditate every morning before they commence their daily routines, but it is now going out as a five-page circular with a code name for the drive.
Operation 3552 stands for three (3) minutes of briefing, five (5) minutes of maithri bavana (loving kindness meditation, five (5) minutes of anapana sathi bavana (mindfulness of breathing) and two (2) minutes of debriefing.
The Inspector General has also ordered that hoisting the national flag and the police standard every morning should be a colourful parade that could be a tourist attraction.
The police chief argued that his men were working under severe stress and needed "mental exercises" to relax.
In February, he admitted that the service had failed because police did not pay much attention to spiritual development.
Soon after he was named Inspector-General in April last year, Jayasundara said he got the top job because he attended 35 'bodi poojas', or offering water to ficus religiosa trees, seeking the appointment. (COLOMBO, April 21, 2017)
