ECONOMYNEXT – The number of people affected by the drought in Sri Lanka is rising steadily, with the authorities now providing drinking water to over 310,000 people, up from 200,000 two days ago, the Disaster Management Center said.

The worst hit is the North-Central province, where 118,000 people are supplied with drinking water, followed by the Eastern Province, where almost 70,000 people needed drinking water supplies.

The center said more districts were affected, with 45,600 people in the North-Western Province and 44,800 in the Uva Province having to be provided drinking water as wells and waterways have dried up.

It forecast mainly dry weather over most of the island.
