ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lankan government is to expand the airport at Ratmalana, in a southern suburb and closest to the capital  city, by acquiring land occupied by an air force base, a spokesman said.

Health Minister Rajitha Senaratna said the Ratmalana airport has potential to make a bigger contribution to civil aviation but is constrained by lack of space.

It has a main runway that is 1.8 km long and 45 metres wide, he told a news conference.

The Ratmalana airport, opened in 1938, was Sri Lanka’s first international airport and handled all domestic and international flights until the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake was opened in 1969.

The government plans to expand Ratmalana airport by acquiring 25 acres to the south of the runway now occupied by the Sri Lanka Air Force base which is to be shifted.
