Sri Lanka unemployment rate at 4.5-pct in 2Q

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's unemployment rate was 4.5 percent in the second quarter of 2017, down from 4.6 percent a year earlier, and up from 4.1 percent in the first quarter, the state statistics office said.
The change was within a margin of error and not statistically significant, the report said. There could also be seasonal changes.
The total employed rose to 8.123 million in the second quarter from 7.815 million a year earlier. Those in agriculture rose to 2.11 million from 1.96 million. Industrial jobs rose to 2.301 million from 2.12 million.
Services sector jobs was flat at 3.723 million from 3.732 million.
About 26 percent of the population was employed in agriculture, 28.3 percent in industry and 45.7 percent in services. (Colombo/Oct25/2017)
