ECONOMYNEXT - USS New Orleans, an amphibious assault ship which sails with the United States' rapid response 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) will dock Colombo on July 24.
The San Antonia Class (LPD-18) vessel also known as a landing platform/dock can carry 700 marines their equipment and deliver them via air and the sea.
The vessel and personnel will engage in a joint program with Sri Lanka's Navy, the US embassy in Colombo said.
About 200 sailors from the Sri Lanka Navy will participate in the two-day humanitarian assistance and disaster relief training, led by members of 13th MEU and experts from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
"We look forward to exchanging best practices with our Sri Lankan partners," Major John Arnold, commander of the 13th MEU forces on the USS New Orleans was quoted as saying.
"Opportunities to exchange expertise on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief help us understand how to best integrate with our regional partners during crisis response."
The sailors and marines will be given shore leave to visit Sri Lanka and they will also visit health clinics and schools.
San Antonio class LPDs have medical staff and a 124 bed hospital.
