ECONOMYNEXT - Workers at Brandix India Apparel City, run by Sri Lanka's Brandix apparel group are on strike demanding higher wages, media reports said.

The workers wanted a minimum monthly salary of 10,000 Indian rupees, India's The Hindu newspaper reported.

Though some of the workers agreed to start work on Monday, another group had gone on strike this week, reports said.

In 2011, there had been suggestions to raise the minimum wage to 8,400 rupees, but it was eventually made 5,000 rupees the report quoted Indian officials as saying.

India's rupee has collapsed from 45 to the US dollar in 2011 to around 65 now. When a central bank generates constant currency depreciation and inflation there is labour unrest. China's Renminbi has appreciated from about 6.8 to the US dollar in 2010 to about 6.4 now.

In the 1980s and 1990 when Sri Lanka attempted to push exports by busting the currency, labour unrest was common.
