ECONOMYNEXT – Women account for up to 80% of workers at Sri Lanka’s Koggala Export Processing Zone (EPZ) which has emerged as a major economic centre in the island’s south and an important contributor to the national economy.
The Board of Investment, which promotes investments in EPZs, said Koggala has 23 enterprises mainly manufacturing garments, plastic figures and footwear and also doing aircraft repair and boatbuilding.
They contributed US$122 million to the island’s export earnings in 2017.
The Koggala EPZ has been declared a bonded area for hub operations benefiting from access to the Southern Expressway and it is only 1½ hours away from the Hambantota sea port.
“This makes the Koggala EPZ attractive to investors who may access markets by shipping from Hambantota,,” the BOI said.
