ECONOMYNEXT - The European Commission has given Sri Lanka 160,000 euros (29 million rupees) for flood relief which will support 17,500 people in the most affected areas.

The EU will provide the funds to Sri Lanka Red Cross Society which will give cash grants to affected households to purchase essential items and clean wells with contaminated water.

Priority will be given to those who have been displaced, the European Commission said in a statement.

First aid and medical services will also be provided, together with hygiene awareness sessions to avoid the spread of waterborne diseases.

Since May 19, heavy southwest monsoon rains triggered floods and landslides in various locations in the island.

Close to 175,000 people have been affected across 19 districts, and 26 people killed. (COLOMBO, 12 June 2018)
