ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's Dialog Axiata, the island's largest mobile operator said it had demonstrated 5th generation mobile telephony capable of 36 Gigabits per second.
Supun Weerasinghe, group chief executive said 'near zero latency' of 5G will allow industrial applications such as autonomous manufacturing and robotics.
Reliable high speed links will also make possible remote surgery and autonomous transport, the firm said.
At an event in Colombo, with technology suppliers, Ericsson and Huawei Dialog had demonstrated the technology to Austin Fernando, Secretary to the President and Chairman of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka.
Dialog said in April 2013, it became the first operator in South Asia o start commercial operations of 4G-LTE services, after introducing 3G in 2006.
Dialog’s 4G-LTE networks could now deliver burst speeds up to 100 Megabits Per Second, the firm said. (Colombo/Aug22/2017)
