137 new COVID-19 patients in Sri Lanka today; total cases rise to 10,424
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan health officials identified 137 new COVID-19 patients today (31) increasing the number of covid patients in the new wave to 6,946, the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 (NOCPOC) said.
Of today’s patients, 38 are from quarantine centres while 99 are close contacts of the Peliyagoda fish market cluster.
With the new cases, total confirmed COVID-19 patients in the island has risen to 10,424. Some 399 individuals are currently under investigation in hospitals, with 6,005 active cases.
NOCPOC reports said six police officers from the Borella police station, two from the Ministry of Media including an Executive Officer and two from the Department of Government Information tested positive today.
As at 6am today, 140 Sri Lankan patients returned home upon recovery, bringing total recoveries in Sri Lanka to 4,142. Of these, three are returnees from abroad while 137 patients are from the Minuwangoda cluster.
NOCPOC said 835 patients recovered from the Minuwangoda cluster by October 31.
Sri Lanka recorded its 20th COVID-19 death earlier today, a 54-year-old female that was undergoing treatment in the Colombo National Hospital, the COVID-19 task force confirmed.
NOCPOC said the patient was admitted to the national hospital on October 29. A resident of Colombo 12, the patient had been suffering from several chronic illnesses and, according to NOCPOC, passed away during the early hours of today.
The entire Western Province is under quarantine curfew until 5am Monday (November 02) in an effort to contain further spread of the virus.
Army Commander Lt Gen Shavendra Siva said areas that are already under curfew will continue to be under curfew after November 02 until further notice. (Colombo/Oct 31/2020)
