20th amendment first step towards dictatorship, says Sri Lanka opposition
ECONOMYNEXT – The proposed 20th amendment to Sri Lanka’s constitution is a first step towards a dictatorship, the main opposition Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) said.
The party led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has invited all progressive forces in the country to set aside ideological differences and unite to protect the 19th amendment to the constitution.
In a statement issued yesterday, the SJB asserted that it would unconditionally partner with any party or group that wishes to safeguard and further strengthen the 19th amendment that is to be soon replaced by the 20th.
Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers this week approved a controversial draft 20th amendment that will repeal many of the provisions in the previous amendment that had trimmed some of the powers of the executive president. If enacted in parliament, the legislation will effectively see these powers restored and in some cases further strengthened. (Colombo/Sep5/2020)
