6.9 million consented to sing the national anthem in Sinhala only – Bandula

The decision to have the national anthem sung in Sinhala only at the upcoming Independence Day celebrations was made with the consent of 6.9 million voters, the Government said.

Defending the decision, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena told reporters today that the Government has formulated national policies in order to fulfil the aspirations of a majority of the people.

The 6.9 million Sri Lankans who voted for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in November last year, he said, constituted a majority of voters.
