ECONOMYNEXT - It is official: Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has had the tastiest breakfast during a brief stop-over in Sri Lanka on Thursday.

The reference to a gourmet breakfast came in a Sinhalese-language statement issued by the office of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who hosted the meal at his official Temple Trees residence in Colombo.

"Prime Minister Wickremesinghe hosted breakfast for Prime Minister Turnbull who said it was the tastiest breakfast he has ever had," the statement said.

However, Turnbull himself did not think it fit to mention the breakfast in his own statement at the end of the three-and-a-half hour visit while flying home from Israel.

The 63-year-old merchant banker from Sydney is generally known to enjoy wok fried egg omelette or a red curry while sipping herbal green tea.

Premier Wickremesinghe's English version of Thursday morning meeting forgot about what in Sinhala was a memorable breakfast for the Aussie leader.

The Sinhala statement did not say what the menu was, but it is almost certain to have contained hoppers, a unique Sri Lankan food made even more popular by President Maithripala Sirisena.

It was after such an epicurean hopper meal at the same venue (temple Trees) in 2014 that Sirisena defected defected from his party to emerge as a common candidate who toppled his host, then president Mahinda Rajapaksa. (COLOMBO, November 3, 2017)
