Call for independent probe into Sri Lankan journalist’s abduction

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Free Media Movement (FMM) has called on the police Criminal Investigations Department to probe the abduction of journalist Pradeep Eknaligoda in an independent manner and bring the culprits to justice.

Eknaligoda has been missing for the past five years. He was reportedly abducted by two people said to be members of Sri Lanka’s army intelligence who have been detained by police for questioning, the FMM said in a statement.

The two alleged army intelligence operatives reportedly seized Eknaligoda in a ‘white van’ and handed him over to an Army camp in Giritale in the north-central region, it said, referring to vehicles used in the abduction of opponents of the former regime including the Tamil Tiger separatist suspects.

Eknaligoda was abducted on 24 January 2010, but no Police investigation was done for five years, the FMM said.

The new government formed after the ouster of the Rajapaksa regime in the January 2015 presidential poll asked the CID to probe Eknaligoda’s disappearance.

“The FMM believes the information gathered by the CID so far is helpful in the investigation and urges the CID to continue its probe and not to be swayed by political or military influence,” the statement said.  (Colombo/August 8 2015)
