ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has awarded China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) a contract for skilled labour to maintain boilers and turbines in the third 300MW unit of the Lakwijaya coal power plant.
The deal was approved this week by the Cabinet of Ministers on a proposal by Ravi Karunanayaka, Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development, the state information office said.
It was under a co-operation agreement valid till September 2019 between CMEC and the state power utility Ceylon Electricity Board under which comes the 900MW Lakwijaya coal power plant in Puttalam, on the northwest coast.
CMEC had been the main contractor which built the power plant which now supplies the island base load power but had regular breakdowns in its early years of operation.
