ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's government is holding an exhibition and workshops in the North Central city of Anuradhapura from July 24 to promote entrepreneurship, where the island is lagging behind regional peers, officials said.

"In Sri Lanka entrepreneurs as a share of the working population is about 3 percent," State Minister for Finance Eran Wickremeratne told reporters.

"It is about 11 percent in Bangladesh and over 20 percent in Vietnam."

Wickremeratne said on public days, many people came to seek jobs. About eight out of ten wanted government jobs, but no one wanted help to start a business.

The Enterprise Sri Lanka exhibition sought to create at least 2000 new businesses with credit facilities and technical help.

Advice will be available to budding entrepreneurs on export markets and business skills.
He said in August, an exhibition is Moneragala led to 5,175 new businesses. There were 640 stalls and over 500,000 persons visited the exhibition.

The current exhibition will have over 500 stalls.

"We have learned from the first exhibition and this one will be more successful," he said.

Minister Wickramaratne said the exhibition will also have education element and the city has an ancient history in trading activities.

Anuradhapura has a history as a regional trading hub dating back over millennia, which historians believe helped drive its prosperity and ancient works that self-sufficient agricultural communities generally cannot achieve. (Colombo/July23/2019)
