ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan seafood exporter Global Seafoods Pvt Ltd is to process Wakame seaweed, highly valued, farmed edible seaweed species used in Japanese and East Asian cuisine.

The Board of Investment (BOI) said it had signed a supplementary agreement with Global Seafoods to process Wakame seaweed for export in their existing factory complex.

“Wakame is a seaweed found in the Pacific Ocean which we will be importing from Japan, processing and re-exporting to Japan,” said Parakrama Weerasinghe, Group General Manager of Global Seafoods.

“It is used for Japanese cuisine, especially soups and some other dishes. It is the first time that this product is processed in Sri Lanka so Global Sea Foods is very proud to be a pioneer in this field.”

Wakame is considered low in calories but high in several nutrients that are essential to health.

Weerasinghe was quoted as saying in a BOI statement that Global Seafoods started operations in 1999 and does processing and exporting of frozen and fresh fish globally.

“Our main markets are Europe and the USA.  We also process Sashimi grade Salmon products in Sri Lanka to be exported to Japan. That also is a new product for Sri Lanka’s export basket which we introduced about two years ago,” he said.

“Earlier this particular salmon processing was done in Vietnam, but we were able to persuade our buyers to process it from Sri Lanka.”

Global Seafoods employs more than 250 staff and supports the local fishing industry by purchasing bulk of its raw material from local fishermen, the BOI said.
