ECONOMYNEXT –Unemployment in Sri Lanka, which has suffered three insurgencies led by educated youth, is highest among the most educated, and especially females, the latest labour force survey shows.
The highest unemployment rate – of 9.5 percent - is from the G.C.E. Advanced Level and above qualified group, according to the third quarter 2018 survey by the Census and Statistics Department, up from 8.5 percent in the same quarter of 2017.
The unemployment rate from the G.C.E. (A/L) and above group has been above eight percent for the five years since 2013. It was 8.1 percent in 2017.
It is high mostly because of unemployment among educated females.
Female unemployment rates are higher than those of males in all levels of education.
“Survey results further show that the problem of unemployment is more acute in the case of educated females than educated males, which was observed consistently over the results of previous survey rounds as well,” the report said.
In the third quarter of 2018, the unemployment rate for A/L qualified and above group among males was 4.8 percent. It was 14.2 percent for females in the same period, up from 11.9 percent a year ago.
