ECONOMYNEXT - International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde has expressed her sorrow at co-ordinated attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka killing over 350 people for which the Islamic State, an extremist group has claimed responsibility.

"We are deeply saddened by the horrific attacks in Sri Lanka and have offered our deepest condolences to the authorities and to all those who have lost loved ones," Lagarde said.

"The IMF joins the international community in condemning these atrocious acts of terrorism."

Sri Lanka has an ongoing IMF program which is expected to be extended until June 2020.

Sri Lanka says it is making progress in dismantling the network of the local organization which carried out the suicide attacks. Up to 60 persons have been arrested or taken in for questioning so far. (Colombo/April25/2019-SB)
