ECONOMYNEXT - Islamic State (IS), a fundamentalist group, has claimed responsibility for the bombings in Sri Lanka which killed more than 300 people, a media report said.

Reuters a news agency said AMAQ, a news organization which is part of the group, had made the claim. But it had given no evidence, the agency said.

A Sri Lankan Muslim group said as far back as 2015 they had given information that some Sri Lankans had been taken to Syria for training.

The IS or The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has links with Islamist groups in Pakistan and Bangladesh such as Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

The JMB has established in an Indian chapter called the JMI.

Sri Lanka Minister Ruwan Wijewardene said a group styled National Thowfeeth Jama'at which is blamed for the Easter Sunday attacks had close links with an organization named JMI.

There had been unconfirmed reports that a suspected Syrian national without a passport had been taken in for questioning in Sri Lanka after the attacks. (Colombo/Apr23/2018-SB)
