Japan diplomats, defence officials, visit Sri Lanka's Hambantota port

ECONOYNEXT - A delegation of senior Japanese diplomats and military officials had visited Sri Lanka's Hambantota port, which is now operated by joint venture company with China.

The delegation had met key officials of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) the operating joint venture, including Chief Operating Officer Tissa Wickramasinghe and Chief Security Officer Admiral Jayantha De Silva.

HIPG said it demonstrated "the high level of services offered by the port whilst outlining its future potential."

The Japanese delegation included Shogo Yoshitake, Director, Southwest Asia Division of the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Yusuke Tanaka, MOFA, Itsuki Sugihara representing the Ministry of Defense (MOD) and Toru Kodama, the Japan Coast Guard.

They were accompanied by Captain Atsuhiro Moroe from the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka.

In April 2018, the 'Akebono' a Japanese naval vessel had called on the port. (Colombo/Aug09/2018)
