Japanese defense minister to visit Sri Lanka amid China links

ECONOMYNEXT - Japan's defence minister Itsunori Onodera will visit Sri Lanka for the first time in history from August 20 to 22.

The embassy of Japan said he will meet Sri Lanka's leaders also have talks with the State Minister for Defense Ruwan Wijewardene said.

"He is also planning to have field visits outside Colombo," the embassy said without elaborating.

Senior Japanese diplomats recently visited Hambantota Port in the South, which is now being managed by China.

China funded the port and SriLanka sold control of it to the country as Sri Lanka Ports Authority got into financial difficulties trying to repay the loans.

Japan had helped plan funded Colombo port development since the 1980s, also with loans, but made it a leading port in the world which is extremely profitable. (Colombo/Aug16/2018)
