ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa officially took over Sunday as leader of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, anointing his brother Gothabaya the person that was needed to take over the country on a national security platform.
He said the Easter Sunday strike was like 9/11 in American and should be a wake-up call.
"We need someone who can maintain national security," Rajapaska told supporters at a party convention in Colombo. "We need someone who can then re-build the country with discipline and law and order."
He said mothers wanted to be able to send their children to school without fear.
People will have to be able to go the temple and celebrate vesak without fear.
"Catholics and Christians should be able to go to church without fear." Rajapsaksa said. "Hindu's should be able to go the temple without fear.
"The Muslims should be able to go the mosque at least on Friday."
He said Sri Lanka needed someone who not only made promise of thing that can be done.
Rajapaksa said when he took over the state service was 700,000 people.
But when he left it was about 1.5 million. Now undergraduates were again looking for jobs.
Rajapaksa said his brother had helped build a party after Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which was built to oppose the United National Party, got into a coalition.
"We have built a part that everyone can work with," Rajapaksa said in his maiden address. "There was an attempt to put us to the group of racists and extremists.
"But it is the current administration that defamed leaders from Asgiri thero to the Cardinal."
He said a new leader was needed who will end drugs and maintain the law without bending it for the party or personal.
"It is not my decision that is important to me," Rajapsaksa. "The country's decision is important to me. Some one who can go with the young generation.
"The decision of the young generation is important to me. A person with discipline."
"Whether I chose or not he has won your hearts. They tried to stop hims with a constitution, with the threat of jail. I am now giving my brother.
"This is Gotabhaya." (Colombo/Aug11/2019)
