ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's new administration has made the Supreme Court independent and created an era where anyone can get a hearing, Deputy Minister of State Enterprises Eran Wickremaratne said following a court ruling that suspended a tax hike.

"The United National Party has ushered in an era when the Supreme Court rulings are respected, and even people who suppressed the judiciary are being given impartial hearings, which was impossible earlier," Wickremaratne said.

"This independence of the judiciary was a great victory for the people.

The government is taking action to effect the necessary legislative measures to achieve the needed revenue which also was being raised for the people."

The new administration came to power promising an independent judiciary, which is a fundamental necessity for liberty.

Sri Lanka's Supreme Court suspended tax changes made on May 02, after Wimal Weeraswansa an opposition legislator went to court saying they were not approved by parliament.

The suspension will be in effect until legislation is passed by the administration.

Since the 1970s successive Sri Lankan administrations have got into the habit of raising taxes and getting parliamentary approval later which critics say violates the principle of 'taxation by consent'. (Colombo/July12/2016)

Very true. If Weerawansa's govt was in power, CJ would be impeached.
