ECONOMYNEXT – Walkers Colombo Shipyard, Sri Lanka’s second shipyard which focuses on small and medium sized vessels, is planning to extend operations to the Maldives, managing director Sarath Obeysekera said.
The company’s first yard, started in the Mutwal fishery harbour leased from the Fisheries Corporation, is also being expanded to enable handling of vessel repairs in a dry berth, he told a news conference.
“We’re also negotiating with a small shipyard in the Maldives,” Obeysekera told the news conference held to announce a boat show in the island’s Dickowita Fishery Harbour from 13th to 15th October 2016.
There is a lot of potential for boat building and repairs in the Indian Ocean especiall in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, he said.
“Our aim is to handle small and medium vessel repair and building,” Obeysekera said.
The Boat Show & Fisheries Exhibition Sri Lanka 2016 is organized by Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) and Boat Building Technology Improvement Institute (BTI).
