Sri Lanka ‘port city’ traffic warning

ECONOMYNEXT – A proposed ‘port city’ next to the Sri Lankan capital Colombo will generate so much traffic that present traffic jams will seem benign, a transport expert said.

“The ‘port city’ will create so much activity that the port city will survive but what is outside may not,” warned Amal Kumarage, Senior Professor of the Moratuwa University’s Department Transport & Logistics Management. “We will have a mobility issue.”

The new government suspended the port city project, being funded and built by the Chinese, saying its environmental clearance approvals under the former Rajapaksa regime were incomplete but now plan to resume it.

City planning authorities need to look early at how to connect the new ‘mega development’ coming up in Colombo.

"It will create so much traffic that you will say what is there today is good but (additional traffic) will be a nightmare,” Kumarage told a recent forum, referring to worsening traffic jams caused by a flood of vehicle imports.

“These are the planning interventions that must go in now – another 2-3 years will be too late,” Kumarage told the forum by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Sri Lanka.  (Colombo/December 08 2015)
