ECONOMYNEXT – A senior Sri Lankan finance ministry official has been appointed as acting director general of the Customs Department, whose officers had launched a strike to protest against the previous government decision to appoint an ex-naval officer.

A spokesman for unions involved in the token strike said they were meeting to discuss their future course of action.

A finance ministry spokesman said H G Sumanasinghe, the present director general of the of Management Services Department of the Treasury had been appointed Thursday as acting director general of Customs.

Unions leaders had said their token strike would spare clearance of exports and not affect essential services but businesses have feared the strike could affect trade and delay imports. (Colombo/January 31/2019 - SB)
