ECONOMYNEXT - Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera Tuesday took on presidential aspirant and former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa head on, accusing him of being involved in a string of murders and abductions during the reign of his brother Mahinda.

Addressing reporters at his ministry, Samaraweera said Rajapaksa was implicated in seven crimes that are currently being invested before courts.

Rajapaksa who has publicly denied involvement in the high profile killings and abductions had announced that Samaraweera was afraid of him because he was capable of delivering results.

"Yes, I know he can. I know what he is capable of doing, and that is why I am afraid of him," Samaraweera said listing seven cases pending before courts.

He said a police Deputy Inspector-General and several others had been taken into custody in connection with the January 2009 assassination of Lasantha Wickrematunga.

"These people had nothing against Lasantha, they were only carrying out orders of a higher up," he said.

He also said Rajapaksa had arranged a false passport for Tiger defector Karuna to travel to London in 2007. Karuna served a jail sentence in London and was deported to Sri Lanka, but Rajapaksa was not indicted over his alleged involvement in.

Samaraweera said a case was also pending on a November 2011 massacre of 27 inmates at the Welikada prison.  (COLOMBO, May 22, 2018)
