Sri Lanka Muslim Provincial Governors resign as protests mount

ECONOMYNEXT - Governors of two provinces in Sri Lanka has resigned the office of President Maithripala Sirisena said as protesting monks continued a fast demanding their resignation and that of a minister in government.
Resingations of Azath Salley, Govenor of the Western Province and M L A M Hizbulla, Governor of the Eastern Province has been accepted by Presided, the statement said.
Protestors are also calling for the resignation of Minister Rishard Bathiudeen.
Athureliya Rathana, a legislator-monk, started a fast in the hill capital of Kandy near the historic Temple of the Tooth.
A group styled Sinhala Traders Association had called for shops to be closed in Kandy.
The protest are spreading to nearby towns like Peradeniya, RepublicNext, news portal reported. (Protests supporting Rathana Thero spreading). ( (Colombo/June03/2019)
