ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and India's newly re-elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held discussions on expanding future economic ties while travelling in a motorcade.

Wickremesinghe accompanied Modi from the airport on his way to an official welcoming ceremony at President's house.

The friendly talks centered on how economic links between the two countries could be further strengthened, a statement from the PM's office said.

"Ideas were exchanged at length about ways to expand economic opportunities between the two countries," the statement said.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had been keen to get an Indian company involved in a container terminal in Colombo port, where China already runs one terminal.

But President Sirisena had reportedly opposed the move last year.

Fresh attempts are now being made to set up a terminal operating company as a joint venture with India and Japan.

There is also a proposal to for a joint venture to manage an airport in Mattala, near Hambantota port which is now managed by a Chinese company. (Colombo/June10/2019)
