ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed three judges to the Supreme Court, including two whose appointments were delayed following a constitutional coup.
Court of Appeal President Preethi Padman Surasena, S Thurairaja and E N P G R Amarasekera were sworn in before the president, his office said.
Justice Sursena replaces controversial judge Eva Wanasundra who retired in January.
Sri Lanka's Constitutional Council, which has powers to veto any nominee of the president, had approved justices Thurairaja and Amarasekera in October on the eve of the constitutional coup. But the president delayed their appointments.
He later expressed unhappiness at the independence of the Constitutional Council which includes his nominee too.
Re-establishing rule of law by restoring the independence of the judiciary had been demand of good governance activists. (COLOMBO, January 9, 2019)
