ECONOMYNEXT - President Maithripala Sirisena said his Sri Lanka Freedom Party is likely to patch up differences closer to a Presidential poll later this year.
"Closer to the election these differences will be ironed out," President Sirisena told reporters when asked about the lack of progress in coming up with a common candidate with ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa's proxy Sri Lanka Podujana Party.
Many SLFP members of parliament are also with the breakaway faction.
The head of of Sri Lanka's Asgiriya chapter had said that Chamal Rajapaksa, President Rajapasksa's elder brother will be the candidate.
The SLPP is a creation of Basil, another brother of President Rajapaksa.
President Sirisena said no party in Sri Lanka had yet chosen a candidate and it reflected the internal conflicts.
In the United National Party, Sajith Premadasa and Karu Jayasuriya had been speculated as likely candidates. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is also in the running. (Colombo/June27/2019)
