ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena has praised a 19th amendment to the constitution which sought to trim the powers of the presidency as a tool to improve democracy amid a controversy over alleged violations.

He said more changes can be done through the parliament to clear any flaws and strengthen democracy.

A statement from his office said, the setting up of independent commissions has been a true victory for the people.

Already a Constitutional Council had started appointing independent judges. The Supreme Court had suspended dissolution of parliament by the President pending a final hearing.

The Court of Appeal had suspended a disputed Prime Minister and Cabinet pending a final hearing.

The statement came while some legislators called for the 19th amendment to be scrapped.
