ECONOMYNEXT – Surveys of land holdings owned by Sri Lanka Railways are to be conducted to improve management of its sizeable property assets, evict squatters and recover ovedue lease rentals.

The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved a proposal by Transport & Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva for socio-economic surveys and land surveys for all lands owned by the Department of Railway.

The state information office said railway lands are to be mapped and dematcated, including 7,000 lots which have been leased.

This was with a view to proper management of such lands and resettling of illegal dwellers in alternative lands.

Over the many years, these lands have been encroached upon under many pretex and issues and permanent structures been built upon. When new homes have been given, they rent it out and come back again using deceptive methods.
Who backs them , politicians. Various assets have been left to rot and decay, and even smuggled out. A priceless old steam engine is left to rot just outside the Fort station towards Maradana.
