ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka has arrested and remanded dozens of nationalists who had engaged in anti-Muslim violence and also arrested three persons who were spreading nationalism over social media, police said.

Anti-Muslim violence erupted this week, following Easter Sunday suicide bombings, which were attributed to organized groups, who were travelling from town to town on motorcycles.

"These attacks were carried out by opportunistic groups," Police Spokesman Nuwan Gunasekera said.

Police had arrested 15 suspects over violence in the Minuwangoda area and the Magistrate had remanded them until May 29. He said the suspects could only get bail from a High Court.

In Wayamba province 60 suspects had been arrested including curfew breakers.

Nine who were suspected of directly engaging in violence were remained by Hettipola Magistrate until May 27.

Another 10 suspects were remanded until May 28 by Kuliyapitiya Magistrate.

Another three had been arrested over spreading hate or false information over social media. (Colombo/May14/2019)
