ECONOMYNEXT  - Sri Lanka's political parties and trade unions are not holding May Day parades and rallies in 2019 following the bombing of Churches and hotels on Easter Sunday by terror cells linked to Islamic State, an extremist group promoting a Pan-Islamic agenda.

Sri Lanka's main political parties are holding indoor meetings to commemorate May Day, with the possibility of further suicide attacks at crowded locations.

Earlier in the morning, a public ceremony was held to honour former President Ranasinghe Premadasa who was assassinated on May 01, 1993 by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber when he was walking with people in a parade.

Security has been tightened across Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's police and security forces have arrested dozens of suspects linked to two groups in Sri Lanka who have been blamed for the attacks. (Colombo/May01/2019-SB)
