ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s civil aviation authority has banned flying of pilotless aircraft including drones after Easter Sunday’s suicide bombings that killed 359 people in three churches and three luxury hotels.

Director General of Civil Aviation H.M.C. Nimalsiri said the authority decided to suspend with immediate effect the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles of any description including drones until further notice.

He said in a statement the ban took into account of the prevailing security situation in the country.

There have been several bomb scares in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo, suburbs and other towns after Easter Sunday’s bomb attacks which wounded over 500 people.

The security forces have been hunting for more members of the extremist Islamist group behind Sunday’s attacks, having arrested about 60 people so far.

Nimalsiri said operating approvals for drones issued by the civil aviation authority stand suspended.
