ECONOMYEXT - Sri Lanka's 2019 budget has put the opposition to sleep with lethargic criticism and most members missing from the chamber, a government legislator charged.
"There are only nine members in the chamber," United National Party legislator, Ajith Perera, who is also a minister, said in a debate on the budget late afternoon Tuesday.
"Member of parliament Lokuge is sleeping well. There, there he is now waking up."
A vote was scheduled on Tuesday for the second reading, but it is not clear whether the opposition will seek a division.
State Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe challenged a heckler to say what the budget deficit was.
"You do not even know what the deficit is. You are reading out notes given by other people, please sit down," he said.
There is nothing to criticise in the budget so they are going round and round, another government legislator said.
