Sri Lanka calls investors to run Mattala international airport

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka has called for expressions of interest from domestic and international companies to invest and operate Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, the country's second airport.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation said in an advertisement in state-run The Sunday Observer newspaper that long term lease options were available for investors.

The airport had been designated as a bonded area and free trade zone.

The airport will have a fully open skies policy with all freedoms of the air indicating that foreign airlines will be able operate to third countries and to domestic airports from the airport.

Expressions for interest will close on August 12, 2016.

The Chinese designed and built airport Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, has made large losses and has been unable to service loans, becoming a drag on Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd, the state airport company.

Government officials have been trying to persuade Chinese firms to take the airport and run it. (Colombo/July03/2016)

    Few other ways.
    a).Profit sharing whilst keeping ownership.
b)Management fee on a management contract as a of profits + KPI's to achieve ect, ect.
Pitfalls to avoid based on 50 years of past experiences.Selecting someone's own cutting personal deals at the expense of the country instead most suitable for the country.

There are 3 ways to operate this airport, profitably.1. Hand it over to a large aircraft overhauling company.2. Hand it over to Emirates as they may need parking space for ever increasing aircraft fleet andoperate some flights.3. Hand it over to a friendly country to havea Air force base with explicit permission to use the runway and terminal for commercial and air force flights owned by Sri Lanka
